The Tailor's Question / Halembu Girl

The Tailor's Question

Shall I sew it all up;
Shall I then?
Sew up the feet too?
Sew up the hands as well?

Shall I sew it all up?
Shall I sew up nose, eyes, and ears too?
Sew up the heart and the mind as well?
Sew up all feeling, all experience too?

How can I leave all this open
During this hour of dire anguish?
Shall I sew up the entire environs too?
Sew up the country as well?

Shall I sew up
The universe itself?

What should I leave open
In such an atmosphere?

Shall I sew it up?
Shall I then?
Shall I sew up the sewing machine itself
And the needle too?

Halembu Girl

There's a doorway without a door.
It seems like it would swallow me.
The stuff all around seems
Like it would eat me up.

Who says I am a fairy from Halembu:
Caressing someone's discarded shoes,
I'm no more than a pair of shoes,
Thrown away.

There's no honey
Though we have a beehive in the house,
Like the song of my heart
It is without words.

There's no courtyard.
Only someone's wheat fields touching the house,
Like the dance of my heart,
That couldn't dance.

I'm a pair of shoes
To be worn by someone
To be worn out
To be used until it's torn.

But surely I could also have been
A fairy, couldn't I?
