Elephant Feet / The Elephant and The Jungle

Elephant Feet

What fun it would have been
To be given elephant feet
As big as the world. O what fun!
I'd have crushed underfoot
The unjust ones, the tyrants,
Just squashed them
As though they were so many bugs!
But is killing the solution?

What would happen
If they thought of me the same way?

This is why
There's no end to battles,
No end to killing,
No end to violence.

I want to be a flower
Like the foot of the elephant
Big enough to cover the world,
And I want to hold
Within myself
All the wounds, all the agonies.

Able to bear this like the flower
Even though the honey-bee
And the bumble bee
Drink and drain me.

I want to be a flower
Like an elephant foot
That could cover
The world itself.

The Elephants and The Jungle

It suits the elephant
To live in the jungle.
To live in a room, a house,
A zoo doesn't seem right to him.

In this jungle, the elephant has space to roam,
A place to play,
A place to move around,
An open space too where he can be by himself.

The jungle isn't meant to be the house of man and woman,
The jungle is the elephant's home.
It's not right for man and woman to grow a jungle inside;
They have to build a home in their heart.

The elephant has to grow a jungle in his heart:
There should be in his heart
Hills and mountains,
Streams, rivulets and rivers.

It suits the elephant
To live in the jungle by itself.
